All in all, they are good-intentioned people. Still, I feel that the organization needs to beef up their security and better inform their employees of digital security when communicating to members about their personal information.

This is a fantastic Credit Union. Both my Truck loan and Mortgage are through NDFCU. The people are friendly and very helpful.

In my reply, I asked why this info needed to be verified, and they ended up calling me. I was still uncertain of sharing the information, and the person on the line said there was a discrepancy in the SSN that I entered (possible typo?). I said I didn't trust an organization that asks for this info via email, and would not be opening an account, and then asked for a supervisor. I was shocked that the supervisor said that sharing information this way is "a matter of preference" for a member! He informed me that their business emails are encrypted, but I said to him that my personal email is not, and it is stored in my sent folder-- Shouldn't it be their preference be to protect their customers? He repeated several times in the course of the conversation that he "appreciated the feedback,." Still, there was no way that I was going to open an account with this level of lack of security.

I heard about this bank on Relevant Radio and really wanted to bank with them because of the availability of locations (even though I am out of state), that they give back to charities that I want to support, and various other reasons. When I applied online, they emailed me back asking to verify personal information (name, SSN, etc). I almost marked it as spam, because I don't know of ANY financial institution or secure organization that would ask for that type of info via email. They had my phone number as well, so why would they email me? At the very least, they could email me requesting that I call them back.

I did appreciate, however, that they informed me with an inquiry regarding questionable usage of my SSN. This was only done when I spoke with the manager, when he was trying to explain why they asked for my SSN in the first place. He patiently gave me all the information about previous institutions that had inquiries with my SSN, some of which I recognized and others that I did not- so I will be doing some research! I would have otherwise been oblivious to this potentially fraudulent activity, dating back 3 years.
